Version 0.2.0 released!

Hey dear ppl,

I have just released a 0.2.0 version of this game with a lot of improvements compared to the very early version from the Game Jam! It's been a bit overdue with the version as I would have hoped to have released this a lot earlier but I got distracted with the flame thrower functionality a bit.

YES! The flame thrower I was planning to have as part of the Game Jam version is now implemented! It was actually a bit more tricky than I originally thought it would be but hopefully now it's adding variety and fun to the game! Flame thrower has this nice new unique ability to burn "things" so it means e.g. trees that previously were blockers can now be destroyed with the flame thrower! It also works to the vehicles but it might not be the best for very fast moving vehicles. So there's staring to be options and considerations in the game to be made.

One thing that most of the game early testers said was that it's waaay too difficult! And I agree, I didn't have any difficulty progression in the game and the vehicles moved really fast from the get go. This isn't optimal way to do it but now I have fixed it. There's a difficulty curve and the early game is a lot lot more easy and mellow. It will get harder but only later on. How does the game feel now? Is it more forgiving and easy?

Along the difficulty curve some feedback I received was about the player lives. There was only one life and if you died you needed to restart. This, along with the difficulty curve created sometimes a very frustrating experience. I have now added "lives" as you would have in a proper arcade. You will have 3 lives (1 + 2 on spare) to start with and if you die, you will be only moved backwards a bit. This required quite a bit of work as well with the logic how game was working, but hopefully with everything in place it's much nicer and fun to play!

In the original plans I also wanted to have trains, but I just didn't have enough time to do the way I wanted. Now the game includes the first passenger train! You will see it will run on tracks, but the mechanism is a bit different. Trains aren't constantly coming, but instead you have lights which indicate if it's safe to enter the tracks. On red light you know the train will come and it is pretty damn fast. On green it's safe to go, so use those moments to advance! I hope this mechanic is a bit different and feels nice addition to the regular vehicles that run continuously.

I have added more sounds and juice in to the game as well. I really hope it feels polished and nice to play. There's also now a music which will play on the level. Funny thing, on the game jam entry I didn't have music so I scored pretty bad on the audio. This could have been avoided with a simple thing, but I wasn't aware at the time of the importance of the music. Music is copyrighted by Zenject sample project (composer unknown to me, but the credit goes there)

Please, give the game a spin and tell how it feels. I would be specially curious to hear if you had a chance to play the Game Jam version and now how this version feels compared to the earlier. I haven't noticed any bugs or issues, so hopefully there isn't any. If you do notice something, please, let me know.

Then I some words about the future. I have some additional ideas for this game but I would love to hear if you have some of yours. I will read every single feedback and think them thoroughly. For the future I would love to solve the replay aspect of this game and the "end goal". Why are you basically playing the game? Is there a reward or some kind of progress? I have some ideas, but nothing definite. Some ideas I have I could add to the game:

  1. More weapons. E.g. Gatling gun! Laser gun etc.
  2. Player costumes. Shades, Bandanas, hats etc. Maybe different player character to play with?
  3. Different blocker types that react to different weapon types. (Add variety)
  4. More vehicles. New train types. Something that would move on the water?
  5. New tile types. E.g. Terrain type in which a tank would spawn and try to shoot the player?
  6. Player boosts. E.g. pogo stick, adrenaline for faster speed, etc.

Which of these ideas you like? Let me know and I can try to prioritize the most wanted features first!

I think this is it. Please, play the game, give feedback and have fun! Cheers!
